Standing Positions

CSBA retains a resume file for three levels of analyst positions (Analyst I, Analyst II, Analyst III) and actively seeks intern candidates for positions throughout the year. All applicants should forward by fax or email a cover letter, resume, and brief writing sample to the attention of Laureen Andrews, Vice President, Finance and Administration. Your resume will be kept on file for referral and follow-up as needed.

 

 

Level III: Senior Defense Analyst

 

Working under the supervision of the President and Vice President, Strategic Studies/Budget Studies, the senior defense analyst will design, organize and implement workshops and strategic planning programs and/or research and write analytic research reports on topics related to military strategy and defense budgets. Responsibilities will also include preparation of briefings and representing CSBA in meetings and other activities.

A competitive candidate for the position should possess a Ph.D in security studies, foreign policy, or political science (or MA with equivalent experience); 3-5 years professional experience relevant to long-range defense planning and defense budgets; experience designing, organizing, and implementing workshops and seminars; demonstrated oral and written communication skills; experience in IBM/networked computer environment; proven ability to work within a team setting; business development skills a plus. Candidate must possess, or be capable of receiving, a SECRET-level security clearance.

 

 

Level II: Analyst

Working under the supervision of the Vice President, Studies/Budget Studies, the defense analyst filling this position will be expected to investigate, examine and analyze information on a range of topics, summarize the results of this research, and draft material for use in CSBA activities and publications. In addition, the defense analyst will assist in making arrangements and preparing game books, briefing slides, and reports for CSBA-sponsored activities.

A competitive candidate for the position should have an MA degree in security studies, foreign policy or political science (or BA with relevant experience), demonstrated research and writing skills, and proven ability to work independently. Organizing and workplanning skills are important. Experience in IBM/networked computer environment is a plus. Candidate must possess or be capable of receiving a SECRET-level security clearance.

 

 

Level I: Research Assistant

Working under the supervision of the Vice President, Strategic Studies/Budget Studies and in close cooperation with other CSBA analysts, the research assistant will be expected to: gather data and information from a wide range of sources; compile bibliographies on selected topics; photocopy source materials; take notes and summarize information; attend meetings and briefings; assist in making arrangements for CSBA-sponsored activities; maintain CSBA library/info resources; oversee/administer internal news clipping service; assist in answering telephones, filing, faxing and deliveries.

A competitive candidate for the position should have an BA degree in security studies, foreign policy or political science, prior work experience (work study, internship, etc.) research and writing skills, and proven ability to work independently. Organizing and workplanning skills are important. Experience in IBM/networked computer environment is a plus. Candidate must possess or be capable of receiving a SECRET-level security clearance.

 

 

Internships

CSBA offers full-time internships (one in Fall and Spring and two in Summer) for highly motivated undergraduate students who are interested in defense policy, federal budgets, military history, or political science. The positions are designed to reflect an intern’s particular interest in conjunction with the CSBA’s needs.

The intern works closely with the executive director and issue analysts on a variety of research tasks. Interns assist staff by gathering budget data and source materials for CSBA reports, tracking legislative issues, preparing materials for the news media, and supporting CSBA-sponsored events.

Successful applicants will have excellent research, fact gathering, writing and computer skills.

A weekly stipend is provided. CSBA participates in the Herbert Scoville, Jr. Peace Fellowships
