Commander Aaron Marchant

U.S. Navy Fellow

Commander Aaron Marchant is the U.S. Navy Fellow at the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments.

His research and writing focus on future naval force structure, the defense industrial base, and U.S. strategic competition with the People’s Republic of China. His work has been published in the U.S. Naval Institute’s Proceedings, The National Interest, and the journal Global Policy.

CDR Marchant is an active-duty submarine officer whose sea tours include assignments aboard USS Seawolf (SSN 21), USS Olympia (SSN 717), and USS Henry M. Jackson (SSBN 730), where he most recently completed three strategic deterrent patrols as executive officer.

His shore assignments have included intelligence and budget roles on the OPNAV staff at the Pentagon, most recently as an action officer contributing to the establishment of the U.S. Navy’s AUKUS program.

He holds a Master of Arts in Global Policy from the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies, where he studied China's economic investments in Latin America. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Astronomy and Physics from Yale University, where his research focused on liquid helium as a medium for scintillation detectors.

CDR Marchant was raised outside Philadelphia and lives with his wife, Jessica, in her native Alexandria.
